How Does Eurythmy Live in the World?

Eurythmy Flash Mob, a spontaneous happening at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, on April 11, 2019:  students, faculty, and parents from the Rudolf Steiner School in New York City, with eurythmists and friends, were silently moving together  “Halleluiah”, the first word given in eurythmy, to honor Swedish artist Hilma af Klint ((1862-1944).  She had known Rudolf Steiner and she was influenced by his philosophy, which he called Anthroposophy.  A collection of her Paintings for the Future were on exhibit in the ascending spiral gallery of the Guggenheim, from October 2018 through April 2019, courtesy of the Hilma af Klint Foundation, Stockholm, Sweden.

Artistic Eurythmy:   Eurythmy is an art of movement, striving to make visible the gesture and flow inherent in the sounds of speech and in music, expressing the laws of language, and has also been developed in the realm of music and tones.  Other elements such as rhythm and form are incorporated with these gestures, combining both the arts of time and the arts of space.   Eurythmy has been developed as a performance art, with stage groups performing around the world.

Therapeutic Eurythmy, also known as EurythmyTherapy:  Therapeutic Eurythmy is a movement therapy in which rhythmical and flowing movements are used which emerge from the sounds that we speak and relate to the sounds of language, and has also been developed with the elements and tones of music.  It assists the internal bodily processes in establishing a healthy rhythm and balance, and can harmonize and nourish the individual human being on all levels.

Eurythmy in Educationpracticed especially in Waldorf Schools from Early Childhood through 12th Grade:  Eurythmy provides an artistic balance to the academic subjects.  It can be a character-building influence and contributes to developing students’ capacities, helping them to participate more fully in school classes and activities, while integrating the different levels of their beings, and the three -fold aspects of thinking, feeling and willing.

Eurythmy as a social art:   Workshops, classes, seminars and courses for adults can develop a more keen awareness of self and of others, bringing a more harmonious relation between one’s inner and outer worlds.  Eurythmy in the Workplace, described below, is also a part of this area of practice, encouraging colleaguial collaboration and respect.

Eurythmy in the Workplace:  Eurythmy has been introduced into the business world and into varied work settings, from Weleda and Telecom to Management Institute, the Swedish Post Office as well as organizational Boards and non-profit organizations.  It teaches how to work effectively alone and in a group, develops balance and harmony along with flexibility and self-confidence, enhancing communication and cooperation within the company and with customers.
